I became involved in advocacy some years ago, too many to mention! I worked as a volunteer since the age of 15, and enjoyed helping people. I first went in to nursing and then found that it was not for me.
I decided to return to education, as I was interested in community based work.
I got the study bug and decided to go to University to study welfare. I loved the social life, and study sometimes!
I graduated with a Master of Arts Degree in Health and Welfare from Dundee University.
Throughout this time I worked with various groups including, Alzheimer’s Scotland, Fife Advocacy, Age Concern, Cornerstone Homeless Trust and Fife NHS.
I enjoy socialising, walking the dog, travel, and partaking in the odd glass of wine (staff would not agree).
I enjoy the variation of the work I undertake. This ranges from attending a local Forum meeting to working at the Scottish Executive as part of Scotland’s Future Forum.
I believe strongly in human rights and mental health, this is why I am keen to continue being involved in research and evaluation work. This work includes working with NHS QIS, Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network, and the Scottish Development Centre for Mental Health.
I love mostly meeting people and making a difference to their lives, it is so rewarding.

Began working with the TODAY Group in September 2005. Previously worked as a volunteer with Stratheden Hospital Patients’ Council at social events etc. Enjoyed meeting people and making a little difference was so rewarding.
Previous jobs, lots!! Factories, shops etc, volunteer training advisor for Rathbone, courses of study – quite a few! Most recent study HND Art and Design which I really enjoyed, as enjoyed being creative. Only thing I am creative with now is my time sheets, will the boss see this? Only joking! Favourite part of the job – everything, being part of a small friendly team, excellent ongoing training and of course the knowledge that I can make a small difference to people’s lives.
Hobbies: Reading, painting (when I find time), socialising, partying (a few red wines).

My name is Carolann Haddow I started my work as an Advocacy Worker with the TODAY Group in September 2005.
Previous to this I worked as a support worker with people who have disabilities.
I wanted to become involved in advocacy to help people represent their views and opinions and ensure rights adhered to.
I really enjoy meeting different people, and working with new issues everyday. It is really frustrating that people who have or are suffering from mental health issues are treated differently from everyone else, so if I can help someone even if it’s just a wee bit then by day has been worthwhile.
I’d like to say my hobbies include exercising and all the things that are good for you but I’d be lying. I enjoy going out with friends and have been known to indulge in the odd glass of wine or two, and if I’m really honest I can be a bit of a shopaholic, when I’m not doing those things which I tend to do quite often I enjoy reading.
